Small Destinations and Experiential Tourism

10 March 2025

14.30 - 16.30 cet

The tourism sector is rapidly evolving, driven by changing trends and the increasing desire of travellers for authentic experiences. Experiential tourism meets this growing demand, offering unique and immersive journeys. Modern trends show that travellers are increasingly seeking opportunities to engage deeply with the local culture, gastronomy, and traditions of a destination, moving away from mass tourism in favour of more genuine and meaningful encounters.

Small destinations are gaining significance in this changing landscape. Though they may lack traditional tourist attractions, they offer immense experiential potential. Rather than competing with major hubs, small destinations focus on providing direct, authentic experiences that connect visitors with local culture, traditions, and gastronomy.

Experiential tourism fosters deeper connections through:

  • Culture and traditions
  • Gastronomy
  • Nature and outdoor activities

A key component of small destinations is event-based tourism, which draws visitors through cultural, sports, and musical events. Concerts, festivals, and competitions provide opportunities to promote the region while offering tailored experiences.

The growing demand for unique, immersive travel experiences is shifting focus away from mass tourism. Investing in small destinations and experiential tourism supports sustainability, promotes local heritage, involves communities, and fosters balanced sector growth.
